Natural Treatments for Carpet Beetles
Essential Oils
Use oils such as cedar, neem, clove, peppermint, and lavender to repel carpet beetles. Mix a few drops with water in a spray bottle and apply to affected areas. Cedar oil is especially effective, and the strong scents of peppermint and clove can overwhelm these pests.
Diatomaceous Earth
Sprinkle food-grade diatomaceous earth on carpets, rugs, furniture, and other infested areas. Leave it for a couple of days before vacuuming. This powder dehydrates and kills carpet beetles and their larvae, and is safe for use in homes.
Boric Acid
Lightly sprinkle boric acid powder on affected areas, let it sit for two to three hours, then vacuum thoroughly. Boric acid acts as a natural insecticide, but should be used with caution around pets and children.
Vinegar
Mix equal parts distilled white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Clean window sills, shelves, and other hard surfaces where beetles may be present. The smell and acidity deter carpet beetles.
Hot Water and Freezing
Wash infested fabrics in hot water (at least 120°F) to kill larvae and eggs. For items that cannot be washed, seal them in airtight bags and freeze for at least two weeks.
Regular Cleaning
Vacuum carpets, rugs, furniture, and baseboards frequently to remove larvae, eggs, and adult beetles. Pay special attention to cracks, crevices, and dark corners.
Seal Entry Points
Seal cracks and gaps around windows, doors, and baseboards to prevent beetles from entering your home.
By combining these natural remedies with consistent cleaning and preventive measures, you can effectively manage and prevent carpet beetle infestations without resorting to harsh chemicals.
