What each genus account contains

Each of the ~264 genus accounts in the 2nd edition is built on the EntoLibry world Cicindelidae data matrix and contains a uniform set of fields, allowing systematic comparison across the family:

Taxonomic header

→ Valid genus name, author, year

→ Type species and type locality

→ Tribal placement (Cicindelini, Collyrini, Manticorini, Megacephalini, Omini, Platychilini)

→ Currently recognised subgenera with authors and years

Descriptive text (~150–200 words)

→ Diagnostic morphology and identification characters

→ Habitat and ecological notes

→ Biogeographical commentary

→ Taxonomic remarks where relevant

Visual documentation

→ 2–4 high-resolution photographs per genus

→ Bioregion distribution map (six-zone scheme)

→ Standardised dorsal, lateral, and diagnostic close-up views where available

New in the 2nd Edition

A complete index of Cicindelidae subgenera

The most-requested feature from 1st edition readers. The 2nd edition includes a comprehensive index of all currently recognised Cicindelidae subgenera worldwide — listed under their parent genus, with authors and years of description. Recent revisions by Wiesner, Cassola, Moravec, Matalin, and Duran & Gough are integrated. Where subgeneric assignments are contested in the literature, the contested status is flagged and the alternative interpretations are cited.

This single section transforms the volume from an illustrated guide into a working systematic reference — for museum curators, taxonomists revising specific lineages, conservation biologists checking taxon validity, and serious collectors curating their material at the subgeneric level.

Foreword by David L. Pearson

The 2nd edition opens with a foreword by David L. Pearson — co-author of A Field Guide to the Tiger Beetles of the United States and Canada (Oxford University Press) and lead author of Tiger Beetles: The Evolution, Ecology, and Diversity of the Cicindelids (Cornell University Press, 2001) — the foundational ecological and phylogenetic reference work for the family. Pearson’s foreword places the 2nd edition in the context of two and a half decades of subsequent taxonomic and phylogenetic change, and identifies what makes this edition distinct from comparable works.
