Carpet beetles are persistent pests that can damage carpets, clothing, and other organic materials in your home. Fortunately, several natural remedies can help eliminate and prevent these insects without resorting to harsh chemicals.

1. Diatomaceous Earth (DE)
Food-grade diatomaceous earth is a fine, natural powder that dehydrates and kills carpet beetles and their larvae by damaging their exoskeletons.
Sprinkle DE in infested areas, especially under furniture, along baseboards, and on carpets. Leave it for a few days, then vacuum thoroughly.
DE is generally safe for humans and pets, but wear a mask during application to avoid inhaling the dust.
2. Boric Acid
Boric acid acts as a natural insecticide by dehydrating carpet beetles on contact or ingestion.
Sprinkle boric acid powder on affected carpets, rugs, and upholstery. Leave it for a couple of hours, then vacuum up the residue.
Avoid direct contact with skin and eyes, and keep out of reach of children and pets.
3. Essential Oils
Certain essential oils, such as lavender, peppermint, clove, and eucalyptus, are effective natural repellents against carpet beetles.
Mix a few drops of essential oil with water in a spray bottle and apply to carpets, furniture, and wardrobe areas.
You can also place cotton balls soaked in essential oils in closets and drawers.
4. Vinegar Solution
Carpet beetles dislike the strong smell of vinegar.
Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and use it to clean shelves, window sills, and other hard surfaces where beetles may hide.
This method is especially useful for non-fabric surfaces.
5. Neem Oil
Neem oil is a natural insecticide that can disrupt the life cycle of carpet beetles.
Dilute neem oil with water and spray it on infested areas, especially fabrics and carpets.
6. Steam Cleaning
High-temperature steam cleaning kills carpet beetles and their eggs on contact.
After vacuuming, use a steam cleaner on carpets and upholstered furniture, ensuring the surfaces are suitable for steam treatment.
7. Regular Cleaning and Prevention
Vacuum carpets, rugs, and furniture frequently to remove eggs and larvae.
Wash infested fabrics in hot water.
Store susceptible items, such as woolens and linens, in airtight containers.
Seal cracks and entry points to prevent beetles from entering your home.
