How did the asian longhorned beetle get to America

The Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) was introduced to the United States most likely by hitching a ride inside untreated wood packaging material, such as wooden crates and pallets, that originated from Asia, particularly China and Korea.

Book novelties:
Prioninae of the World I.
Cerambycidae of the Western Paleartic I.

This mode of entry occurred before regulations on wood packaging materials were enacted to prevent such invasions. The first infestation in the U.S. was discovered in Brooklyn, New York, in 1996.

The beetle larvae bore into hardwood trees, causing severe damage, and the introduction via wood packaging material has been a common pathway for many invasive wood-boring insects. Since the initial discovery, infestations have been found in several states, including Illinois, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Ohio, and South Carolina, with ongoing eradication efforts. The beetle’s introduction through untreated wooden packing crates highlights the importance of international regulations on wood packaging to prevent the spread of invasive species.
